Key Considerations for Medical Mold Material Selection

Nov 19, 2025 Leave a message

1. Mold Steel Selection
Medical mold steels require high hardness, high wear resistance, good corrosion resistance, and excellent polishing performance. Commonly used materials include: S136, 420, NAK80 stainless steel mold steels, and specially treated tool steels. For molds that come into long-term contact with corrosive medical materials, higher-grade materials such as titanium alloys can be considered.

2. Surface Treatment Technology
To improve mold life and product quality, medical molds often employ various surface treatment technologies: chrome plating to improve wear resistance and demolding properties; nitriding to enhance surface hardness; PVD coating to reduce the coefficient of friction; and special polishing processes to achieve a mirror finish (up to Ra0.01μm). When selecting a surface treatment technology, the characteristics of the product material and hygiene requirements must be considered.

3. Application of Antibacterial Materials
For medical product molds with high hygiene requirements, mold materials containing antibacterial components can be considered, or an antibacterial layer (such as a silver ion coating) can be added to the surface treatment to reduce the risk of bacterial growth, which is particularly suitable for the production of disposable medical consumables.
